Mostnica Gorge

Mostnica Gorge and the Voje Valley are among the most beautiful and most visited natural attractions in Bohinj. On the way through the Gorge, you can admire the crystal-clear water and the boldly reshaped rocks, and enjoy the rich flora, fauna and cultural landscape that has been nurtured by the local people over the centuries. In autumn, the path leads you among the cows and their tinkling bells to the waterfall where the Voje Valley ends.

The Mostnica is an alpine river with rapids and waterfalls, offering an interesting display of nature’s creativity through the Voje Valley and all the way to Stara Fužina. Devil’s Bridge

Just above Zois Manor, the stone, single-arch Devil’s Bridge spans over deep flumes high above the Mostnica river. It offers a dizzying view into the narrow troughs carved out of the limestone bedrock by the Mostnica river. The stone bridge shortened and simplified the transport of iron ore and wood charcoal from the surrounding mountainous areas to the smelters below on the Mostnica river. Bohinj was the most important centre of mining, iron and steel production in the Julian Alps. Due to its iron ore deposits, it was continuously inhabited as early as the Iron Age (8th century BC).

Triglav National Park is the only national park in Slovenia that protects the last areas of pristine nature in the Alps. A diverse area of the highest peaks of the Julian Alps, their jagged ridges, vertical cliffs, deeply incised valleys, hard-to-reach gorges, wild waters, forests, blankets of alpine flowers, mountain lawns and scree, high-mountain karst, glacial lakes and the tender splendour of biodiversity.

In 1908, at the time of the national struggle between the Slovenes and the Germans, the Slovenian scientist, naturalist and seismologist Dr Albin Belar proposed that the valley of the Triglav Lakes should be protected. This would create the first protected area in the whole of Europe. Despite the fact that the commission evaluated the proposal positively, the idea was not accepted.

In 1924, members of the Slovenian Mountaineering Society and members of the Slovenian Museum Society (Nature Conservation Section) leased 1,400 hectares of land in the Triglav Lakes Valley, thus enabling the creation of the Alpine Conservation Park in the Triglav Lakes Valley (lease agreement). Later proposals to enlarge the park were interrupted by the Second World War. Efforts to restore the park continued after the Second World War, and in 1961 (53 years after Belar’s initiative) a decree was passed declaring the Triglav Lakes Valley a national park (2,000 ha in size). The park is named after the highest mountain, Triglav (2,864 m), while the lowest point is Tolminska korita (180 m).

The Triglav National Park Act, which increased the size of the park to 83,807 ha, was adopted in 1981. In 2010, the new Triglav National Park Act was adopted and the park was enlarged (to include the settlement of Kneške ravne and its surroundings).

Triglav National Park is one of Europe’s oldest parks. It lies in the north-west of Slovenia, on the border with Italy and close to the border with Austria, in the south-eastern part of the Alpine massif. It overlaps almost completely with the Eastern Julian Alps.

Lake Bohinj, together with the Sava Bohinjka and its tributaries, represents a unique water system, which is why the Republic of Slovenia has decided to declare Lake Bohinj a natural value of national importance, and the Triglav National Park Act provides for the most strict protection measures for the lake, as its shores lie in the first and second protection zones.

Similar protection applies to the Sava Bohinjka and most of its tributaries – all with the aim of preserving this pristine water system for future generations.
The boating regulations apply to all types of vessels (including stand-up paddleboards – SUP).

For other sports vessels, such as kiteboats, sailboards, hydrospeed boats, inflatable boats up to 2 m in length and similar props, the use of entry/exit points and the purchase of a permit are not required.

No boating is allowed in the bathing water area of Lake Bohinj, which is 100 m from the shore, except to/from entry/exit points or harbours.

All activities in, on and around the lake, and the Sava Bohinjka river and its tributaries are carried out at your own risk. We recommend that you choose to be accompanied by experienced and qualified local guides.

Entry to Lake Bohinj and the Sava Bohinjka river is only allowed at entry/exit points and harbours.
