Echoes of yesterday

Once a Tannery, Full of Stories

River House Bohinj stands on a site rich in history. At the turn of the 20th century, a tannery operated in the house by the stream at this location. Run by the Godec family, their work was instrumental in the development and preservation of traditional local leather craftsmanship.

Favorable conditions for livestock farming in the Bohinj Valley provided tanners with high-quality raw materials for producing durable and highly valued leather. During World War II, however, the tannery took on a different, historically significant role: behind the facade of everyday work, secret partisan strategies were forged, contributing to the regional resistance movement.

We recognize that the history of the old tannery in Bohinj is not just a segment of local heritage but a valuable part of the cultural landscape, reflecting past economic activities, gradual industrial modernization, and the influences of globalization.

In recent decades, researchers, ethnologists, historians, and local cultural workers have made efforts to reconstruct the craft’s history, collect testimonies from former artisans, and analyze preserved documentation.

At the same time, numerous pieces of former tannery equipment can now be found in museum collections or serve as educational tools, offering younger generations insight not only into the craft itself but also into the living conditions of the past.

Bohinj River
House today

At Hotel River House Bohinj, we strive to create a connection between the past and the present. Our primary goal is to offer a modern yet homely environment where our guests can recharge their batteries surrounded by nature.

Today, our family-run hotel, River House Bohinj, proudly stands on this site, with walls that preserve the rich cultural and artisanal heritage of past generations. During the design and construction of River House Bohinj, we retained many elements of the former tannery to the greatest extent possible, subtly incorporating them into contemporary design solutions.

With this approach, we aimed to create a space that not only tells its own story but also preserves the memory of the master tanners of the past, their effort and skill, and the broader historical dimensions of this place.

A Vision
for tomorrow

Bohinj River House is built in accordance with sustainable principles, utilizing primarily natural and locally sourced materials during construction. Special attention was given to energy efficiency, reflected in the economical use of energy, efficient heating, high-quality insulation, and a planned ventilation system that ensures a pleasant indoor environment while minimizing our environmental footprint. Aware of the importance of responsible resource management, we have implemented a system for waste separation and reduction, using recycled and renewable materials and ensuring that as little waste as possible ends up in landfills.

By obtaining an appropriate environmental certificate, we further strengthen our commitment to sustainable practices for the benefit of the environment and our guests. This way, every moment spent here contributes to preserving precious nature and supporting the local community.
